Stand Up Paddling
on the open sea
We love to surf the sea!
Some stand up paddle boards are designed for use in waves on the open sea. These short boards are very manoeuvrable and are used in the surf of the sea. These boards are shorter, narrower and lighter than many other SUP boards, the fins ensure good maneuverability which is an advantage when surfing the waves. However, this comes at the expense of stability, so this type of board is not well suited for beginners. Maintaining a stable hold on the board in the middle of waves takes a lot of practice on your SUP.
Usually, these Wave SUP boards have a length of about 245 cm - 310 cm and a volume of 130 - 180 liters. If you already have experience in surfing, you can use such a board, but you should be prepared to suffer setbacks at the beginning. However, if used correctly, you can have a lot of fun surfing the waves in the open sea with these boards. However, not only fixed SUPs but also iSUPs are an option, as they are also suitable for surfing and offer better value for money.
Stand Up Paddling
on Calm Lakes
Paddling on calm waters, for example on lakes, is fun and is even described as "meditative" by many stand up paddlers. It offers an ideal balance to everyday stress. Taking a stand up paddling trip to the local lake with your family after work is a great way to relieve the stress of work.
A touring SUP or all-round board is usually used for Stand Up Paddling in shallow water. These boards are designed for touring, they can be partially loaded with luggage. This makes longer tours on calm waters possible. So you can pack a waterproof pack and set out on a nature tour. The touring SUPs are usually a bit longer and than other boards, about 320 cm or longer.
Why an inflatable iSUP board can be better
In flat water, inflatables are great. These boards have a small disadvantage in terms of performance, but this is hardly noticeable. Since these boards are mainly designed for "fun paddling" or family tours, inflatable boards are clearly ahead of fixed boards in this area of application. The good portability is very practical here and therefore the inflatable board should usually be given preference over the classic board.
Stand Up Paddling
on RUNNING RIVERS
Special whitewater boards are very manoeuvrable, but also require a high level of experience and concentration. Very calm rivers, on the other hand, offer rest and almost meditative stillness and relaxation.
As already described above, inflatable boards are ideal for the River Stand Up Paddle. An inflatable SUP board is even absolutely necessary for white water tours, since fixed boards do not cope well with stones, rapids or shallow water. So you should rather use an iSUP for your river tours with the SUP because of the advantages mentioned.
However, inflatable and fixed boards are equally suitable for riding in calm rivers. In flowing waters you should rather use inflatable stand up paddle boards, these are well suited for use in rivers.
